What is European Myeloma Day?
27 September is European Myeloma Day (EMD). MPE hosts this Day every year to raise awareness of myeloma and bring together our extraordinary community. EMD is predominantly an online campaign which aims to spread awareness of the most important topics in myeloma. This year’s campaign focuses on early diagnosis, helping general practitioners (GPs) and family doctors to recognise the signs and symptoms of myeloma sooner.
Throughout September we will share key facts about myeloma diagnosis, patient stories and a new campaign video, launching on European Myeloma Day itself. Join us in making a difference!
Earlier myeloma diagnosis
Myeloma can be difficult to spot. Its symptoms are often mistaken for other conditions, and research by MPE found that a diagnosis can take over five months, require more than four medical consultations and involve visits to at least three different medical specialists. Recognising myeloma earlier improves patient outcomes and quality of life and this is why we have developed an important resource.
The MPE myeloma diagnosis pathway
What is it?
The MPE myeloma diagnosis pathway is a practical tool that sets out the signs and symptoms of myeloma alongside the tests GPs and family doctors should consider when myeloma is suspected.
What is it for?
Recognising myeloma earlier improves patient outcomes and quality of life. The pathway is designed to support the non-specialists who usually see patients first, GPs and family doctors, in spotting the signs and symptoms and ordering the right tests more quickly.
How to use it?
The MPE diagnosis pathway is free to download (below) and MPE is making it available in over 15 languages for distribution across Europe. Here are few ways you can use it:
- Download it and take it to your GP, and ask a friend or family member to do the same.
- Share it on social media and help raise awareness of the need for earlier diagnosis and how doctors can use the pathway.
- Print it and bring it to in-person patient information days, congresses, or other Blood Cancer Awareness Month events throughout September.
- Reach out to GP networks, medical societies, professional forums and healthcare provider portals and ask them to share the pathway on their websites and professional channels.
Every share could help someone to recognise the signs of myeloma sooner and will ultimately support earlier diagnosis across Europe.
The MPE myeloma diagnosis pathways are still being translated and will be available very soon.
