Myeloma and fertility
In this video, Dr Giorgio Orofino, Hematology-Oncology Fellow at ...
In this video, Dr Giorgio Orofino, Hematology-Oncology Fellow at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, discusses what is currently known about fertility in people with myeloma. As more younger people are diagnosed ...with myeloma, fertility is becoming an increasingly important topic.
Dr Orofino explains how some myeloma treatments, particularly high-dose melphalan used before stem cell transplantation and cyclophosphamide, can affect fertility. He also discusses recent research reporting successful pregnancies after CAR T-cell therapy. This provides encouraging early evidence that fertility may be preserved in some patients, although more research is needed to better understand the effects of CAR T-cell therapy on fertility.
The video also covers:
Why fertility should be discussed as early as possible after diagnosis.
The importance of referral for specialist fertility counselling before treatment, where appropriate.
Current gaps in research and the need for clearer clinical guidelines on fertility counselling and preserving fertility.

What does “cure” look like in myeloma?
Professor Philippe Moreau, President of the International Myeloma Society, and Head of Haematology at the University Hospital of Nantes, France explains the emerging ...concept of cure, why experts believe it is now appropriate to discuss it, and what it could mean for people living with myeloma.
He discusses how advances in treatment, particularly newer immunotherapies used alongside established approaches such as autologous stem cell transplantation, have dramatically improved patient outcomes. The conversation explores the proposed international consensus definition of a cure, including the importance of being off treatment and maintaining minimal residual disease (MRD) negativity for at least five years.
Professor Moreau also explains:
Why sustained MRD negativity is considered a key indicator of long-term disease control
Which treatment approaches may make a cure possible
Why access to the latest therapies varies between countries and affects patient outcomes
Which patients are currently most likely to achieve a cure
Why doctors emphasise hope while recognising that not every patient will achieve the same outcomes
The interview concludes by discussing how continuing advances in myeloma treatment are bringing life expectancy for some patients closer to that of the general population.
Please note: This interview reflects current expert opinion and emerging evidence. A cure is not yet achievable for everyone with myeloma, and treatment decisions should always be discussed with your healthcare team.
