Launch of Myeloma Forward
Launch of new myeloma patient support group, Myeloma Forward, in Northern Ireland
On Monday, 23 March a new myeloma patient support group, called Myeloma Forward, launched in Belfast, Northern Ireland (NI).
Myeloma Forward will hold bi-monthly meetings where speakers talk about some aspect of living with myeloma and share experiences and stories, providing peer support and peer advocacy.
The launch event was held in the NI Assembly, Stormont, Belfast and was attended by myeloma patients and their families, healthcare professionals, patient advocacy groups including MPE and Myeloma UK, research organisations and importantly, members of the NI assembly (also known as MLAs). The event was hosted by Michelle McIlveen MLA, following outreach and engagement by a Myeloma Forward patient in her constituency.
As well as launching Myeloma Forward, the event was designed to raise awareness of myeloma, the issue of late diagnosis and the importance of access to clinical trials and new treatments. The first part of the event was an informal “drop-in” session, with tea, coffee (and scones!), where MLAs could speak with attendees and hear about myeloma and these important issues.
Participants also heard from a range of speakers, including the Chair of the NI Assembly Health Committee, Philip McGuigan MLA; Dr Sarah Lawless, a haematologist in Belfast; three myeloma patients, including Bronagh Scott who organised the event and MPE co-CEO Kate Morgan.
Finally, attendees heard that the symbol that represents Myeloma Forward is the South African blood lily. They chose this flower, not only because of the name, but as a symbol of growth and strength. The launch event was a great success, with many attendees and great dialogue about the topics important to the myeloma community. MPE looks forward to seeing the development of Myeloma Forward and working with them in the coming years!
