Slovenia ‘lights up’ during Blood Cancer Awareness Month

Slovenia ‘lights up’ during Blood Cancer Awareness Month

This September, our Slovenian member organisation, Društvo BKB, once again marked Blood Cancer Awareness Month and European Myeloma Day, with a wide range of activities dedicated to raising awareness and supporting patients across Slovenia.

They organised 12 information stands in health centres, hospitals, and at the University Medical Centres in Ljubljana and Maribor. A special highlight was 17 September, Patient Safety Day, when they emphasised the importance of safety and quality in healthcare.

On 27 August 2025, in cooperation with the Lymphoma & Leukemia Association, our Slovenian colleagues held a press conference dedicated to raising awareness about the symptoms and warning signs of blood cancers.

On 20 September, they reached out to the wider public at Prešeren Square in Ljubljana. Together with the Center for Health Promotion Ljubljana Center, they organised a Health Day for patients. Participants had the opportunity to learn about proper physical activity and nutrition, mental health, undergo blood pressure measurements, and receive many useful tips for everyday life. On this occasion, they also presented the new book Amyloidosis, introduced by Enver Melkič, MD, haematology specialist at the Clinical Department of Haematology, University Medical Centre Ljubljana, and patient Milojka Javornik, who lives with amyloidosis.

That same evening, they also launched a photography contest, Light It Red – Together We Conquer Blood Diseases in cooperation with the Photographic Association of Slovenia. Across the country, 30 landmarks, including castles, fountains, statues, municipal buildings, and other sites, were illuminated in red as a symbol of solidarity with patients.

They also focused on online awareness activities. On 27 September, through their social media channels (Facebook and Instagram), they shared information about myeloma, including a podcast and a touching patient story. Wow, what an amazing month of activity!

September is now behind us, but the efforts of our Slovenian member organisation to raise awareness and support patients with blood diseases continue every day. We are proud to have Društvo BKB as part of the Myeloma Patients Europe network. What a great job they’ve done this September.
